You could consider a smoke alarm as the most basic of a security device, but try to go beyond that if at all possible and install a password protected home security system with a battery backup. That way, should the fire be due to an electrical problem, the unit will still operate long enough to alert everyone.

Last, you need an exit strategy as part of your home security plan. Remember the fire drills we all did in school? That is the same format you need to follow. Depending on where anyone happens to be when the emergency occurs, there should be a designated primary exit and a secondary exit identified. Once outside, there should be one place that all occupants are to gather, so family members plus any officials who respond to the emergency can be assured that everyone is present and accounted for.
